U.S. Insurance Industry Has $7.5 Trillion in Cash and Assets: NAIC

A new report from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) reveals that the U.S. insurance industry reported a total of $7.5 trillion in total cash and invested assets at the end of 2020, up 7.7 percent from 2019. The report indicated that cash and invested assets have grown steadily on an absolute dollar basis since 2011, with BACV increasing more than 40% during the 10-year period. The U.S. insurance industry's composition of assets has been relatively stable over time, with bonds continuing to be the largest component at 62.6 percent of total cash and invested assets at year-end 2020, followed by common stock investments at 13.2 percent, mortgages at 8.3 percent, and Schedule BA assets at 6.1 percent.
