The data indicate that the number of reported cases in the U.S. would exceed 6 million within a few days. During the last week in August, the rolling daily average of new cases declined slightly, and hospitalizations fell by approximately 9 percent. However, the nation is still seeing more than 40,000 new infections each day, nearly double the daily number in May and June as states in the Midwest and South report surges in cases of COVID-19. According to the article, the U.S. has reported at least 1,000 deaths per day for most of the past six weeks.
