NAIC Warns On Christian Health Cost Sharing Ministries

Plans are not insurance.
January 7, 2020

The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) has issued a Consumer Alert warning that health care sharing ministries (HCSMs), discount plans, or risk-sharing plans are not insurance and they can’t guarantee payment of claims.

State regulators in New Hampshire, Colorado, and Texas are beginning to question some of the ministries’ aggressive marketing tactics, and said in some cases people who joined them were misled or did not understand how little coverage they would receive if they or a family member had a catastrophic illness. “The nature of what we’re hearing from consumers around the state is absolutely heartbreaking,” said Kate Harris, chief deputy insurance commissioner in Colorado.
