DOL: Industry Registers Job Gains, But That Could Change

June report does not capture the re-closings in Arizona, California, Florida and Texas.
July 8, 2020

Preliminary monthly jobs figures for June by the Department of Labor (DOL) Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) show the insurance industry gained 6,300 jobs. The nation’s overall unemployment rate dropped to 11.1 percent, down from an April peak of 14.7 percent because of pandemic-related shutdowns. The BLS report for June showed that the sector comprised of insurance agencies and brokerages was up 1.6 percent, with a total employment of  842,100 jobs.

All of this may change, because the government survey extracts employment data from the middle of the month and as a result, the June report does not capture the re-closings in Arizona, California, Florida and Texas, which recently have been inundated by a resurgence in coronavirus cases.
