Diversity in the Workplace

When individuals feel that they cannot be themselves at work, they will not engage fully.
April 29, 2020

When it comes to diversity, many organizations have modified their recruiting and hiring practices to ensure they are complying with federal regulations, and that’s important. But diversity isn’t just about race and gender! It’s about creating a work environment that celebrates the differences that make a team successful. When individuals feel that they cannot be themselves at work, they will not engage fully as part of the team or in assigned work.

We all have unique personalities, preferences and behavioral tendencies that shape our communication style, decision-making process and problem-solving methods. Diversity includes creating a work environment that recognizes and appreciates those personality types and unique motivators as an integral part of a successful team.

Some employees are naturally assertive, competitive and focused on the big picture; they are likely your leaders and producers. Others are naturally cautious, pragmatic and detailed; they likely make up your service team. Everyone has personality tendencies that steer their actions in certain directions. As a leader, understanding how to manage to the diverse needs of your team — rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach — is the best way to drive results, keep people engaged and maximize productivity.

But how do you create that inclusive environment after hiring?
