Australia Fire Claims Could Top $600 Million
January 7, 2020

Insurance claims for property losses this bushfire season could easily double to top $600 million, with about 1,300 homes razed across New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, and Queensland since late August and as blazes continue to rage across four states. The true cost could be much higher, with many of those who lost property likely to be underinsured or have no insurance at all. The Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) says 4,299 claims worth $297 million have been lodged so far this fire season, but more were on the way as assessors moved in to the latest fire-affected zones.
